Adventures in South America: Lago Grey, Torres del Paine, Chile

After reaching Torres del Paine, we decided to go first to Lago Grey, about 20 kilometres further into the park from the entrance gate. It was raining when got to here, so we had a snack at the cafe by the parking lot, and about ten minutes later the rain had stopped and we could hit the trail. The weather was really weird, because it had been pouring rain, and then just a few minutes later it looked like this!

After about a kilometre or so we were by the lake on a bit of a sand/gravel bar that connects to an island.

We could see the Grey Glacier across the lake.

There are also small icebergs that have broken off from the glacier floating in the lake--they are bright light blue and in the lower centre of the photo below.

We reached the island and started hiking along this trail.

Unfortunately, the weather turned ugly again and was so bad we had to turn back. It was pouring and the wind was crazy.

Somehow, by the time we got back to the Rio Avutardas it was nice again!

So, in the span of an hour the weather was awful, then gorgeous, then awful, then gorgeous. In all we walked 4.2 kilometres and it was a nice experience, although unfortunate to not be able to go as far as we had hoped.
