Adventures in Asia: Urga, Uzbekistan

Our final sightseeing stop on our Aral Sea tour was Urga, a village that is now abandoned, on the shores of Sudochye Lake. Sudochye Lake was at one time a bay of the Aral Sea, but now is an isolated body of water.

The facade of a fish processing plant and remnants of a few other buildings remain at the site.

From right at the lakeshore actually you do not see much water, mostly just a lot of beautiful reeds!

But, on the cliff up above there are the remnants of a watchtower . . .

. . . and from here you get a good view of the lake. I believe Sudochye Lake has receded somewhat, but it remains much healthier than the Aral Sea it was once part of, and it is quite beautiful from up here and a sharp contrast with its arid surroundings.

After Urga, we drove about another hour southeast until we reached Kungrad, where we had a lunch stop, and then from there carried on back to Nukus.
