On the western edge of what was the Aral Sea is the Ustyurt Plateau and we drove along a "road" like this for about an hour.
Around 9:15 we reached the village of Qubla-ustyurt, but before we actually reached the village itself, we stopped to say hi to this camel.
By the way, the Ustyurt Plateau feels vast--basically flat and the same terrain as far as you can see.
And, yet, there is a small village here.
We stopped and had about 20 minutes to walk around. On the outskirts of the village are the animal pens.
There is a baby camel in one of these.
An adult camel is nearby--I am not clear why this one has to be penned. Maybe she is pregnant?
There are also sheep . . .
I found it really peaceful watching the animals, but I also wanted to see more of the village, so I went for a walk down a residential street.
That is the school in the photo below.
And there is even an old Soviet airstrip here!
At about 9:45 we were ready to leave and carry on, but I really enjoyed seeing Qubla-ustyurt!
