Adventures in Asia: Siem Reap, Cambodia

My girlfriend Andrea and I are in Siem Reap, Cambodia, having arrived late last night via Vancouver and Shanghai.

We landed at 22:00, got our visas ($30 USD, on arrival) and luggage and were outside in less than an hour.  Our hotel, Two Dragons Guesthouse, picked us up in a tuk-tuk at the airport and drove us the half hour or so to the guesthouse.

Our room is nice enough, and only $15 a night.  Thankfully, it has fairly good air conditioning that is also quiet enough to let us sleep.  It also has this interesting sign on the door:

Downstairs, they have a great outdoor patio, with fans to keep the heat at bay, and large aquariums full of fish.

We ate breakfast there, before renting bikes ($3 for two!) and cycling up to Angor Wat.  The bicycles were in the worst shape of any I have ever encountered that were still capable of being ridden.  Mine, for example, had no rear brake, and Andrea's seat was missing a large piece.  In fact, although most bikes around here are in rough shape, I'm not sure I've seen any others as rough as these ones.  So although they were a great deal, they were a challenge to work with!

Nonetheless, we did about a 25 km ride this morning, past Angor Wat itself, and spent most of our time inside the Angor Thom compound.

We also saw some monkeys!

We had to call it a day and head back into town because of the heat and hunger, and we made it back for 13:00.  Now we're eating curries on our patio, plotting out our itinerary for tomorrow, which will include tour by tuk-tuk starting out with sunrise at Angkor Wat.
