We had pre-purchased 10 ringgit (~$3 Canadian) tickets on a bus from the airport to KL Sentral, KL's main train station. It was an hour ride--the KL airport is really far south of the city itself.
It was mid-afternoon already by the time we got to our hostel, the YMCA, which is a short walk from KL Sentral.
By now I was quite hungry, so we went out for food and ate at one of many Indian restaurants in the neighborhood (known as Brickfields). They're mostly what I know as "self-service" style, which means you look at food behind glass and point at what you want and the server dishes it onto a plate for you. Our plates were about 10 ringgit each (again, about $3 Canadian), and the food was delicious, although we had to deal with obnoxious employees who were pushy and generally annoying.
After lunch we roamed the neighborhood, especially another shopping mall which connects to KL Sentral called Nu Sentral. It's at least seven floors of shopping, in a style identical to Western shopping malls, although some of the stores are Asian brands. They also had one store that was promoting a Korean company's construction of a rapid train system between KL and Singapore.
There was even a little video game that allowed you to "drive" the train.
Once we had enough of the mall we headed back to the YMCA, freshened up, and then caught an LRT to KLCC--Kuala Lumpur City Centre, where the famous Petronas Towers are.
