Adventures in Asia: Sur, Oman

Our road trip continued after Wadi Bani Khalid and we drove 90 minutes nonstop on excellent highway through the desert and the mountains and reached the coastal city of Sur. Sur is on the Gulf of Oman and our ultimate destination for the day, Ras Al-Jinz, is on the Arabian Sea, but I had heard Sur was a nice city, plus I wanted a coffee, so we took a few minutes for a visit.

We found a cafe across from the Al Ayjah watchtower. It was very hot, but we walked around briefly with our take out coffees.

We decided to check out the Sur souq before leaving, so drove along the bay until we reached the soqu parking lot. Evidently everyone was finding the hot afternoon a good reason to not be out, because the souq was deserted and all the shops closed. By the way, something that is really funny in Oman is most of the store signs include English, but appear to usually be super literal translations from Arabic such that they are amusing in English. These are some examples, albeit not the funniest ones we have seen.

Elsewhere we had seen signs like "Repairing Bicycles," "Sale of House Hold Items," "Washing and Drying of Clothes," and "Sale & Repairing of Electronics Goods." These definitely make an Oman road trip just that much more interesting.

Anyway, after our visit to the souq we drove along Sur's corniche and back onto the highway toward Ras Al-Jinz.
