After breakfast at our hotel this morning, Karrar picked us up and we drove north out of Basra. We are heading to Najaf, but will have several stops along the way and our first was a visit to Al Qurnah. The town of Al Qurnah would not be on a tourist's itinerary except that it is the site of the confluence of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers.
This is the Euphrates looking in this direction (basically west) . . .
. . . and the Tigris to the north.
These rivers are not just important to contemporary Iraq, but their watersheds are more or less the birthplace of human civilization.
In fact, according to some the Garden of Eden was here as well as the original home of the Hebrew patriarch/prophet Abraham.
While we were here some fishermen came into view.
I enjoyed watching them cast their net and it crossed my mind that the technique has likely been used by humans at this very spot for millennia.
