I arrived in Kota Kinabalu (KK, locally) last night.
Today was mostly spent focused on getting ready to climb Mt. Kinabalu tomorrow, but I met up with my brother (who more-or-less just happens to be here for a couple of weeks) and we were able to explore some of the city. The most exciting part of the city to me is the waterfront fish market, right next to the fishing boat harbour.
There are a lot of kinds of seafood for sale--a variety of fish, lobsters, crabs, clams, oysters, cuttlefish, squid, prawns, and so on.
Some of the seafood ends up dried.
A friendly seller invited us to sample these dried squid; very salty!
Besides fish, the market also includes a fruit and vegetables section . . .
. . . and a building with handicrafts and cheap jewelry and such.
Of course you can buy everything and take it to go, but there is lots to eat and drink here, most of it made fresh basically right in front of you.
We ate cuttlefish, a vegetable dish of sorts, a seaweed salad . . .
. . . as well as clams, crabs, and a large snail of some sort.
We ate only inches from the water itself, but this unfortunately meant having to watch rats run back and forth beside us! I was gratified somewhat when I took a leftover crab shelf and pegged a rat in the face with it. Still, I would prefer in the future to dine without the company of water rats.
